How does the laser treatment work?

The GentleLASE® System, a revolutionary long-pulse high energy alexandrite laser, creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deep into skin tissue. The light delivers a controlled amount of therapeutic heat which destroys the hair follicle leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology protects the upper layers of your skin with a cooling burst of cryogen. Together, the long-pulse laser and DCD cooling offer optimal treatment with minimal side effects.

What can I expect during treatment?

Depending on the amount of hair treated, the procedure varies from patient to patient. Each patient can expect:

• Treatments are performed in the privacy and comfort of Aura Skin Spa.
• Safety eyeglasses are worn to protect the registered nurse and the patient’s eyes from the laser light during the procedure.
• A small hand-piece that touches the skin is used to deliver the laser light. A light spray of coolant onto the skin is felt just before each laser pulse.
• A test area may be done prior to the entire treatment. A full treatment may be done on the same day or up to two weeks later, depending on the skin’s reaction.
• Most patients experience little discomfort at the treatment site because of the dynamic cooling device.
• The procedure could take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the area being treated.
• The treated area may become pink or red within 30 minutes of treatment; this may last from a few hours to several days and is relieved with the application of ice or cooling gels.

Does it hurt?

The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold. Some patients may feel slight discomfort with the laser pulse, sometimes described as the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort is minimized by Candela’s DCD cooling.

Topical anesthesia may also be requested based on individual preferences or tolerances. This will be discussed during consultation with Aura’s registered nurses in advance of the laser treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

Multiple sessions are required because hair grows in cycles. The number of treatments required depends upon your skin color, hair color and coarseness of the hair. Everyone will require at least four treatments as the process is only effective when the hair follicle is in its active growth phase. The hair’s active growth phase is approximately every six to eight weeks, the duration between each treatment.

How do I prepare for treatment?

• Avoid the sun 4-6 weeks before each treatment.
• You must avoid electrolysis, plucking or waxing hair for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment.
• If you have a history of perioral herpes, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed.
• If you have a dark skin type, a bleaching cream may be started 4-6 weeks before treatment to optimize results.

Any hair should be trimmed or shaved, and your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried, removing any makeup, cream, or oils on its surface before laser treatment.
